Max has been at it, AGAIN. Making more mouth watering foods for his family. The week he made this peanut butter treats recipe, we blew through two batches. He made the first batch and Maggie (7 yrs. old) had the chance to make the second batch. She preferred hers without the dark chocolate topping and we enjoyed them, too.
HERE'S ALL IT TAKES
peanut butter filling
- 4 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1/3 cup dark brown sugar
- 1 1/2 cups smooth peanut butter
- 2 scant cups powdered sugar
chocolate topping
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 tablespoon butter
In a medium bowl, mix the melted butter with the brown sugar, peanut butter and powdered sugar.
Spoon the mixture into a 8-inch by 8-inch baking pan. Spread it out evenly as you can. Press it down firmly on top with a spatula. It doesn't have to be pretty, you're going to cover it with chocolate.
In another small bowl, add the chocolate chips and 1 tablespoon butter. Melt the chocolate in the microwave at 70% power for 1 minute. Remove bowl from microwave and stir gently until all the chips have melted and chocolate is smooth. If you still have a few unmelted chips, put the bowl back in the microwave. Set to 70% again, for 10 to 20 seconds. That should do it for you.
Spread the chocolate over the peanut butter mixture. Let it chill until it has set but is still soft enough to cut.
Cut the mixture into squares and remove them fro the baking pan, then put them back in the refrigerator to finish setting.

These remind me of a recipe my MIL use to make but it had graham cracker crumbs in it. I need to make those again and try this recipe too. It would be fun to compare the taste difference in the two. Chocolate, PB, and sugar, You just cant go wrong!
You’re right, Megan. We can never go wrong with chocolate and peanut butter. Oh, my stomach got a pang just thinking about them together.
Have you tried this recipe with crunchy peanut butter? I was just thinking the texture might be good in a different, but yummy way!
Hi Courtney,
You’ll have to give a whirl and let us know. My family is not a fan of crunchy peanut butter.
I’m so excited about this recipe. I’ll see if my 3.5 year old son will want to join me to make these delightful goodies! It’s so easy I think he’ll enjoy it too!
kinda like puppy chow without the chex:)
I’ve not heard of that recipe, Kate. Do you have a copy of that to email me?
Hi Jill,
I just have to send you a HUGE THANKS for this recipe! My husband and I live in Albania, and I’ve been dying to find recipes for these all-American treats for him. This one was perfect!! So easy and one of his favorites since childhood.
Thanks again and
Merry Christmas!
