Ground Beef Cooked Ahead

You will see me refer to this recipe, very often.  When I know I have a busy week coming up, I cook ahead.

I have learned to keep cooked meat and poultry in the freezer.  It saves me money to buy the meats in bulk and I save time when I cook it all up at once.   Later on when I reheat the cooked meats, they can easily be seasoned for Italian dishes, Tex-Mex dishes and simple down home meals.

HERE'S HOW I PRECOOK GROUND BEEF

  • 2 pounds lean ground beef

  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons oregano
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • pepper to taste

In a large skillet over medium to medium high heat, cook beef, onions and spices until meat is well browned. Divide meat into 1, 2 or 3 cup portions, you decide. Store in good freezer bags or containers and keep in freezer for future meals.

GOOD TO KNOW
Cooked meats
can be kept in the freezer 1 to 3 months.

My favorite cooking tip of all time. I do both the chicken and the hamburger but the last time I cooked up a roast in my slow cooker and divided it into packets. That gives me three options for meat when I want to make a quick meal. If you like barbecue sandwiches, you might want to cook up a pork roast and freeze that. That way you can have hot roast beef sandwiches, BBQ sandwiches, tacos, chicken with a sauce, chili, so many things you can make from these little packets in your freezer. I call these my “add a sauce” dinners.

    • You’re a genius, Eve! I love it! I love it! THANK YOU for the inspiration.
Santa brought me a Food Saver vacuum packaging system for Christmas, I was and still am THRILLED.
Tips like yours just add to my list of all the ways I can stretch dollars and save time.
