The Farmer’s Garden

I completely support and promote those folks growing their own foods and looking for places to market their tasty harvests.  It is far more gratifying to go out of my way to buy locally grown meats and produce than to make a quick trip to the grocer for sub-par foods grown halfway around the world.  That's solely my opinion and it's why I'm happy to promote another source for locally grown foods.

Maureen Farmer created and launched The Farmers' Garden site in May 2009 and it is rapidly growing nationwide.  Simple and easy to use, in time I see it yielding a bountiful harvest for all who use this service.

The Farmers' Garden is a surplus garden produce exchange where you can buy, sell, trade, or give away your extra backyard produce. Anyone can search for produce in their local area. Register now for free to list your excess fruits and vegetables. By using this site, everyone can become a locavore and have access to local, sustainably grown, fresh produce.

Many backyard gardeners grow varieties of fruits, vegetables, berries, etc. not found in your local supermarket. Try new types of seasonal produce and you'll be glad you did. Some gardeners may be willing to provide you with a delicious recipe for preparing the bounty of their harvest. It is also a great way to meet and support members of your community.

Gardening is becoming more popular every year. Growing your own produce is fun, saves money and encourages people to eat healthy. Locally grown food is fresher and has a higher nutritional value. Backyard produce is commonly sold within a couple of days of being picked. Eating foods that are in season also saves money, since this is when they are readily available, usually at a lower cost. Register now to begin sharing your tasty surplus produce with others.

Spread the Word About The Farmer's Garden.

The more people that know about this service, the greater your chances of selling, trading, giving away or getting fresh local surplus produce. Download our flyer and post it in your area, as permittted.

  • I love this post. I have my own garden and thoroughly enjoy it. I’m also fortunate to live by a farmer’s market. This time of year, it’s a bit tough though, many of the markets close in Seattle. :)

  • Hi Kristi!

You and I are in the same boat. I didn’t put up enough fruits and vegetables in my freezer while the gettin’ was good from our farmers’ market.

This next growing season I’m determined to train myself not to think from week to week, but rather by the availability of produce. I asked for a Food Saver vacuum system for Christmas just so I can truly preserve and store up when certain foods are at their peak.

  • We have a Food Saver, love it. Did you get your Christmas wish?

  • Oh yea! I got my wish! It’s still in the box. I wish I had something to vacuum pack.

  • Terrific! You’ll get so much use of out of it. My husband is a fly fisherman, so we often smoke fish and seal it with our food saver. Enjoy!

    • OH that sounds wonderful, smoked fish. I acquired a used smoker this past Summer, but haven’t learned to use it. And someone gave me a bag of Apple branches, too. I can’t wait to smoke SOMETHING, too. I read up on cold-smoking cheeses, but then I want to eat Applewood smoked bacon.

I know a couple of farmers that have arranged to catch a wild pig for me. I about to take a lesson in what it takes to process wild game. I’m a little nervous.

  • I don’t blame you, I would be nervous too! There is so much I want to do, and not enough time in the day. Sounds like you are in the same boat. I hope you have a happy new year, with lots of time to use your smoker and food saver!

  • Good morning Kristi!

I like being in the same boat with you. This is fun.
Thank you for your sweet wishes – I hope they come true ;D

HAPPY NEW YEAR KRISTI! May you have all the time you need
    filling 2010 with fun memories.
