Michael Pollan's latest book, Food Rules An Eater's Manual is perfect for those folks who have grown weary and foggy on which foods we should be eating and which foods we should be avoiding.
Food Rules is the condensed version of Pollan's In Defense of Food without the history of nutritionism and the accounts of how we've come to think of and manufacture our food today. It's a short and handy reminder of what foods are truly healthy for our bodies.
140 easy to read and amusing pages. This is a GREAT book to keep us headed in the right direction to good health. This is not a dieting book. It is not about losing weight, keeping points, counting carbs, eating low-fat high protein, ya-da ya-da ya-da...
It's about eating food; fresh, true food.

Love to shop at my local farmer’s market and my local food co-op!
I do it all: grow my own, patronize farm stands, farmers’ markets and the grocery store.
I like to try feeding my family food that’s as close to the farm as possible. Sometimes it’s hard in my northern climate to find good quality fresh foods. We do have one grocery store that buys local produce and I love that! I also grow my own fresh veggies and can’t wait for the spring growing season! I’ve actually never gone to our local farmers market. I’d love to but it’s a timing issue.
I find it expensive! I shop farmer’s markets, co-ops and the local grocery and natural foods stores, I find it hard this time of year to get all the greens and fresh vegis I am spoiled with in summer, we tried to grow food, our squirrels and birds are very healthy!
I love growing my own vegetables, I think it is helpful for my family to encourage healthy eating. Last summer my children were so excited watching our zuchinni’s grow, one day they came running in the house shouting “Mom, mom there is a zuchinni as big as my leg!”.
This year we are planting beans, pumpkins and more appendage sized zuchinni!
Sarah, that is funny! And you are so right about encouraging healthy eating.
Send me pictures of your garden as it grows. I love gardening and seeing how others do it.
I wish I had my own garden and am very jealous of everyone that does!!
It is on my to do list in the next few years to grown my own produce. The freshness, taste, and love that goes into homegrown fruits and veggies is unbeatable. I also wish I had a greater selection of farmer’s markets where I am located, but we only have a small market for a few months out of the year.
I am planting a vegetable garden with my kids this year – we are going to try and grow at least 50% of our vegetable intake this year!! Thanks for the chance to win!
I love it Melissa!
The kids and I are starting our first garden together, too.
Today, Maggie and I dropped in giant sunflower seeds along the fence line. I can’t wait to watch their faces as they discover the rewards and satisfaction of growing plants.
Keep me posted on y’alls garden fun. I love to talk gardening.
I find that knowing what’s “right” to buy (e.g. whole foods, things with completely recognizable ingredient lists) not only makes my shopping life easier, but also my cooking and eating life as well. Now I know that I will always be able to create food from scratch, I will always know what’s in it, and I will always eat my veggies.
My dad always had a wee vegetable garden, and I so miss being able to pick fresh corn and eat it straight off the plant. Living in Manhattan severely limits my ability to grow anything of my own, but thankfully New York has a wonderful web of beautiful farmers markets, and I’m able to put my money where my mouth is — or put my mouth where my money is?
Eating the ‘right’ foods is definitely different for each person. What I consider to be ‘right’ for me are foods that make me feel good to eat. I shop at many different places because I live in Manhattan. I shop on Fresh Direct for my ‘big shop’ of the week and do a once or twice a month stock-up at Trader Joes for value on things I get in bulky amounts like butter and some frozen items. Then I supplement throughout the week at Whole Foods, Gristeades, small grocery stores, drug stores, and corner stores. I dont usually have much time to get to green markets, but as the weather gets nicer I’m planning to go more on the weekends.
Eating whats ‘right’ for me is natural! Vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy, and proteins, are right for everyone so I eat the ones I like best and keep it fresh! I think its most enjoyable to eat the things that make me feel best. Also, loving to cook its always fun to shop– even when its clicking though a website adding my food choices to a virtual shopping cart.
I don’t have a green thumb, but love to support those who do. I love to shop at my local farmers’ market, and also love it when friends give me treats from their gardens.
doing my best to “keep it local”
I do the best I can within my means (time wise, $$, where I live) as often as I can. I think that’s all that all of us can do!
I grow a garden every year and can or freeze whatever I can get the deer to leave for us. I also purchase from our farmers’s market whenever I can.
I enjoy shopping for the “right” foods. I love to go to specialty markets, farm stands, etc. During the summer, I like to grow as many of my own vegetables as I can.
I do my best to provide healthy options for my family. Living in a small town, I’m thankful for the garden my entire family is able to share! It’s neat to see my son in the garden with his grandparents and cousins gathering vegetables for dinner.
What a blessing, Shelby. That should be our new American dream; entire families working together to sustain themselves.
Hey Jill! Hope you’ve been well
I’m crazy about healthy food, but enjoy it all. If I had to explain how we eat — it’s everything in moderation, trying to be as heavy on the veg as possible with fresh salads, monosaturated fat, and very, very little packaged/processed/prepared food. Think chips and cookies here. I try to support a bit of everything and to be aware of where my food comes from as much as possible. Getting greens at a local market that sells from local farmers helps. Now — I need to exercise more
Hi Kelly! I’ve been well, thank you. You’re absolutely on the right track to good health.
Everything in moderation and keeping the grocery bags full of fresh foods that don’t require a nutrition label will always serve us well.
