Name That Food #1 Print

So I was standing in the super foodie mart and came across some unique food items. Some I had NEVER seen before, some I had seen but didn't know what to do with them or how they tasted. That's when I got the idea to have a little fun.

Do YOU know what this is? Have you ever EATEN it?
How did you eat it? Is it REALLY good?

For those of us who don't have a clue, stay tuned. I photographed the store sign with it's going price. I liked to see how many super foodies we have in the crowd. But first, I need enlightenment and a little reality on this.

.

Wow, I have no idea. I feel like I should be watching that on the discovery channel though, in a coral reef or something.

I’ve never seen that fruit(?) before, but it kinda looks like a hairy pitaya. I’ll wait to see what it is :D

It looks like a fruit I at in Costa Rica called mamon. You peel off the spiky exterior and eat the grape-like fruit inside. So yummy!

    Litchees! Right?

  5. ~nm says:

And you peel the skin and eat the pulp on the seed an throw away the seed! I LOVE litchis! (Don’t know the English name for it)

I love this. This is good. I’m going to hold out a little longer, maybe through the weekend before I reveal the name.

I’m hoping we meet someone who really uses this fruit. (There’s the first clue.)

Hi Jill, it’s definitely a rambutan. I used to climb the rambutan tree at my grandmother’s house back in Penang, Malaysia.

It’s a very delicious fruit, sweet with nice bite to it. All you need to do is peel the hairy rough skin off to reach it’s pearly white (sometimes beige) inside. It has a woody seed under the juicy flesh so be careful when you pop it whole in your mouth. Texture and flavor similar to litchee but with a more tropical flair :)

    I am from Penang too!

Some “breed” of rambutan are not so tasty because the “skin” of the seed will stick to the flesh. I am more picky on this, I’ll have to spit the “skin” out.

Pardon my english, hope you understand me.

Matt & Elaine got it right on the money!

    (everyone is applauding, whistling, “woohooo!”)

Thank you very much. Now, I’m interested in trying this fruit. Who’s with me?
